Paul Goldschmidt will be a very popular -- and for good reason -- first baseman tonight, but don't overlook Miguel Cabrera at the position.

This season, Miggy has hit just one home run with a .093 ISO and .269 wOBA against southpaws. He can’t get the ball off the ground against them, as his 56.1 percent groundball rate has contributed to his lowly .222 BABIP.

He’ll face CC Sabathia tonight, who has completely shut down righties in 2016. He’s holding them to a .079 ISO and has allowed just one long ball.

But I’m betting on the larger sample tonight, not the two months of abnormalities we’ve seen from Cabrera and Sabathia.

Last year, Miggy hit lefties to the tune of a .248 ISO, .435 wOBA, and a 40.3 percent hard-hit rate. During that same stretch, Sabathia allowed a .198 ISO to righties while giving up 25 home runs.

Six months of data or two months of data? That’s the choice tonight given the two extremes in this matchup. More people will lean on the two-month sample, making Miggy an excellent low-owned tournament option.
