10 Fringe Prospects Who Boosted Their Value at the NFL Combine
Marlon Mack, RB, USF
Profile: 5’11”, 213 lbs., 32” arms, 9” hands
Pessimists will look at the profile of South Florida Bulls running back Marlon Mack and wonder why he lost 34 carries between his sophomore season 2015 and as a junior in 2016. I'm instead impressed the fact that he sustained a yards per attempt rate over 6.5 for the past two seasons.
Mack produced at higher rates to offset the drop in volume. His 6.82 rushing yards per attempt was an improvement on his 6.58 in 2015, and ranked 15th out of the 180 FBS backs with between 100 and 200 carries. He also scored on 8.62 percent of his carries this year (3.10 percent before) but caught no more than 28 passes in a season; ladies and gentlemen, this is your LeGarrette Blount of the 2017 NFL Draft class.
The rusher solidified his status at the Combine with a solid 4.50 40-yard dash, a 35.5-inch vertical jump, and a 10’5” broad jump. Those might not seem like great numbers, but he has a thick frame and his explosiveness is really good for that reason.
Mack closely compares to Marcus Lattimore (95.96%), Marshawn Lynch (95.85%), and Cierre Wood (95.81%) physically by our Sim Scores.
