Fantasy Football: 11 Players to Avoid in 2017
Jay Ajayi, RB, Miami Dolphins
After finishing 2016 as the RB11 in standard and PPR leagues, Jay Ajayi has every right to be on your mind come draft day, especially in best ball leagues. He’s explosive, as evidenced by his three 200-yard games last season (twice against the Buffalo Bills, who he faces in this year’s fantasy playoffs). He has a coach who wants to continue to run the ball -- Miami had the sixth lowest pass-to-run play ratio in the league last year -- and when the Miami Dolphins do pass, it's reasonable to expect that an increased trust in Ajayi overall will lead to more looks in the passing game.
So, why bother to include him on this list? Consistency.
Ajayi scored over 46% of his total 2016 fantasy points in just three games. In the 12 games he started, he reached double-digit fantasy points just five times in standard scoring. DeMarco Murray and Jordan Howard, two running backs going directly ahead of Ajayi in drafts, reached double-digit points 13 and 10 times, respectively.
Remember, kids -- it’s not the number of points you score, it’s how you score them. Spend your draft pick on a reliable vet instead. —Ian Goldsmith
