Which NFL Head Coach Will Be the First to Get Fired?

Brought in by the Dolphins as an offensive guru, it's fair to say that Adam Gase hasn't exactly blown anyone away in his two seasons with the team. They've finished 24th and 25th, respectively, in offensive yards the past two years on their way to an even 16-16 record.

They were 14th on offense, according to our metrics, in 2016, spearheaded by the 4th-best run game. But they fell to 32nd in both passing and rushing in 2017, never adequately replacing Ryan Tannehill, who was lost for the year in training camp.

Jay Cutler was the replacement, but he was one of the big reasons for Miami's woeful offense last year after he was lured from retirement by his former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator (Gase). Of the 26 quarterbacks with at least 400 drop backs in 2017, only DeShone Kizer and Joe Flacco had lower Passing NEP per drop back than Cutler.

Tannehill will be back under center this fall, but he'll be without Jarvis Landry, his safety blanket. If Tannehill and the 'Fins get off to a slow start, then Gase could be in serious trouble. The Dolphins have previous experience for not waiting until Black Monday to make a coaching change. Three times in the last 14 seasons they have fired a coach mid-year (Dave Wannstedt in 2004, Tony Sparano in 2011 and Joe Philbin in 2015). But it should be pointed out that they waited until the campaign was over before firing Cam Cameron after a single 1-15 season.
