John Ross, WR, Cincinatti Bengals

DraftKings Price: $3,900

Projected Points: 4.6

Projected Value (points per $1,000): 1.18

DeSean Jackson. Will Fuller. Ted Ginn Jr.. All three players share similar traits desirable in tournament settings: speed that can break a slate with a long touchdown bomb. Queue John Ross, who’s also in that mold and the current NFL Combine 40-yard dash record holder.

Ross has missed three out of the past four games for the Cincinnati Bengals due to a groin injury, but appears to be coming out of the bye practicing in full on Wednesday. Unlike Ross, teammate A.J. Green is not healthy and expected to miss time.

Green has a 26% target market share, 40% of the team’s air yards, 34.1% of team’s red zone targets, and a 0.67 Weighted Opportunity Rating (via airyards.com), so yes, Green has been vital to the Bengals and vacates a large chunk of receiving opportunity. Behind Green and Tyler Boyd, no player has more than a 10% target market share on the season.

In the first four games that Ross was healthy for, he was just an ancillary player behind Boyd, Tyler Eifert, and Giovani Bernard. Two of those three players have injuries of their own and are out this week. Even though Tyler Boyd will continue to be a factor in the offense and should see a bump in weekly volume, he won’t inherit all of Green's weekly opportunities.

The Saints, whose passing defense ranks fifth-worst amongst numberFire's rankings, are weakest against wide receivers and have allowed the most DraftKings points to wide receivers. In the first four games of the season, Ross had an 13.3 average depth of target. He's operating in the sweet spot of where the New Orleans Saints are most susceptible, allowing league-highs in catch rate at the deeper portion of the field.

Ross currently projects for 4.6 points, which would sink lineups if it holds true, but we are hoping to hit the tail end of his range of outcomes and less on what his weekly average might be. We've seen periphery receivers record season-bests in higher total games this season, and with the Saints-Bengals game projected to be the highest scoring on the week (54.0), Ross fits that profile for tournaments.
