We finally have a quarterback off the board, as Greg selected Peyton Manning with the 3.05 pick. At this point in the draft, Manning had become somewhat of a value, but most of the numberFire staff subscribe to a late-round quarterback approach and prefer the security of getting receivers and running backs early to load up on scarce positions that are in high demand.
Toby Gerhart sneaks into the third round, and he makes a lot of sense in a standard league. With most of the backs around him receiving a downgrade due to their role as a "receiving back," Gerhart stands out as a high volume rusher who could lead the NFL in carries this season. Even if he doesn't, his role is more secure than Reggie Bush, the top alternative on the board, and he makes for a wise choice as your fantasy draft approaches the mid-30s.
My pick: Andre Ellington, Arizona Cardinals, RB - On only 164 touches, Andre Ellington finished among the top-10 in our Total NEP rankings among running backs, which combine rushing, receiving and passing NEP to determine overall production and efficiency. He figures to see more work in 2014, and if he's able to keep up the pace he set last season, he'll easily outperform his draft position in the third round.
