Not much was expected out of Theo Riddick at the start of this season. With Joique Bell expected to take on early-down duties in Detroit, and electric rookie Ameer Abdullah taking over the change-of-pace and passing down role, Riddick was seen as nothing more than a backup to these more heralded running backs.
But after the first six weeks of the season, it's clear that we need to revise our narrative of the Lions' backfield.
Riddick has been a fixture on this offense as the team's third-down back all season long, accruing seven targets per game through Detroit's first six games, including double-digit targets in Weeks 3 and 5. And this past Sunday against Chicago, Riddick continued this trend, catching 3 of 6 targets for 50 yards while also chipping in with 28 yards on 7 carries on the ground.
With Riddick's steady workload, Bell's lingering injuries keeping him off the field, and Abdullah's inability to protect the ball (he's fumbled four times in six games this year), Riddick makes for a nice addition as a tailback with a nice floor. He could also see his ceiling increase should the running backs ahead of him on the depth chart continue to falter.
