Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers
Positional ADP: RB16 | Projected Finish: RB13
Carlos Hyde looks close to a fair value, but I think his downside far outweighs his upside.
The San Francisco 49ers look like a terrible offense this year. That's bad news for Hyde, because it means fewer rushing touchdown opportunities and likely more passing. Hyde hasn't done much yet as a pass catcher, and it doesn't look like he'll be in line for a lot of pass-game work this year.
So much for the upside. What about the downside?
The 49ers have a new general manager and coaching staff, none of whom have ties to Hyde. The new regime did, however, bring in Kyle Juszczyk, Tim Hightower and Kapri Bibbs. Then they added exciting rookie Joe Williams in the draft and signed Matt Breida shortly after. That's (counts on fingers) five new running backs. It sure doesn't look like the new staff is excited about working with Hyde.
Our 49ers home page is littered with bad news. Things like "Hyde not guaranteed starting job," and "Hyde might not keep his roster spot." Most of the bad news for Hyde centers around the enthusiasm for Williams. Juszczyk, a capable receiver, should also be a factor.
Too much competition, too much writing on the wall, and not enough offensive fireworks. I'll be looking elsewhere.
Instead Try
Again, I prefer Ware at a similar cost if you're set on taking a running back at this point in the draft.
